Historical/Background Info:
Not much to say about this very small town. It is located at the beginning of the Aisen Fjord as we have been cruising in fjords almost ever since leaving Puerto Montt. At least it is smooth sailing!! There is no dock for cruise ships here so we are riding in the ship’s tenders (lifeboats) for about a 15 minute ride to the tender pier near the town’s center. With a population of about 2000 there is not much to do or see here. The tours today will be driving up the Simpson River valley through the Andes to either Puerto Aysen (10 miles away) or Coyhaique (38 miles away). In 2012 we went to Puerto Aysen on a rainy day. The valley was very lush and green. The farmers raise cattle here for the local markets. If I was a cow, I would want to live here as they have LOTS of nice green grass and stuff to eat all the time. Vegetables were also raised for local use. The main industry is raising salmon for export to the US.
Again this Patagonia area of Chile is incredibly beautiful with lakes, rivers, national reserves/parks all featuring marvelous landscapes. I can assure you it is very lush, very picturesque, but VERY isolated. This is a fantastic place for the outdoorsman. Some of the activities include: fly fishing, horseback riding, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, and ski resorts are not far from Coyaique.
What We Did Today:
This morning we had a very scenic cruise in the fjords. The mountains on both sides of us, especially on the mainland side are from 4,000 to 10,000 feet high and extend hundreds of feet below the water. There are thousands of little islands that make up the Chilean fjords. Unfortunately the clouds are low lying this morning (this is pretty normal for here) with scattered rain showers.
One of the many showers.
Some very low lying clouds in the valleys.
It is AWESOME cruising in the fjords this morning as the views change by the minute. At about 10:00 am the Captain made a PA saying we will be 2 hours late arriving at Chacabuco so now we will arrive at 1:00 pm. We were late leaving Puerto Montt yesterday due to the medical disembarkation of a passenger.
This salmon farm is close to where we are anchored today.
The Ocean Princess was anchored here when we arrived. It is same size as our ship.
Last night's production show, "Film Flashback" was even better than the first time we saw it last segment. Didn't think that would be possible. A new entertainer came aboard yesterday and her first show will be tonight. She is a rather new entertainer on cruise ships. Nicole Sasser is a trumpeter and singer. We will be going to her show at 9:30 this evening.
